I’m fascinated by large numbers. They are a big part of our lives in so many ways, but they are so hard to visualize and understand. There aren’t many things we can touch or see a million of at once. I am also interested in wealth inequality and personal finance. I’ve brought all of these interests together in this video.
The focus of this video is to think about the differences between getting a lifetime of earnings yearly or all at once. I hope this gets you thinking about how having large lump sums of money is fundamentally different in terms of the benefits it affords people. I am planning to do a few more videos such as this to help put large numbers and large quantities of money into perspective. I know others have done these types of videos, but given the importance of the topic I think the more, the merrier. I encourage you to share with students and have them figure out ways to make sense of large numbers in ways that are meaningful to them.
